Aboriginal Ways

Australia: Life in the Outback

To the Aborigine, life was all about survival, a work ethic had nothing to do with it, here in America as well as in other parts of the industrialized world, we are taught a good and moral work ethic in order to improve our lot in life and have things previous generations couldn't even imagine having.

The Aborigine knew no such thing, because of their environment, their only focus was surviving, they don't understand and even laugh at us for working so hard. They wouldn't think of working hard, to do so would burn up too much energy, in turn because of the lack of readily available food, they would probably starve to death.

Their life has been greatly romanticized, people often tell them, "It must be great to live off the land and not have the worries of modern day civilization." Their reply, "If you think it is so great, try it!"

Life was very hard in the outback, in the extremely dry years, when food was almost nonexistent, women wouldn't ovulate, thus no children were born. There are even rumored cases of cannibalism, when one is desperate and hungry he will do anything to survive.

In better times, only the healthy babies were kept, they were suckled for 7 years. The mother was expected to keep up her end of the work and raise the child. If the mother couldn't do both, the baby was thus killed.

It would take about 6 acres to support one adult, so with the average family containing four or five people, the average tribe would consist of twenty to thirty people, thus it would take many acres to support just one tribe. They lived entirely off the land, surviving mainly on ants, termites, and grub worms. If they happened to live near a stream of water, a delicacy of fish or even crocodile could be enjoyed.

Even today, with all the good intentions of the Australian government, many of their lives have changed very little. In many instances the government have provided free food, housing and shelter for them, but after spending forty thousand years living in the bush, they have a hard time adapting. Many sleep outside in back of the government housing, being more comfortable than they would be in a nice warm bed.

Many have lost their way, because of the changing society, many don't have a purpose and have resorted to drugs and alcohol. Let's hope they don't disappear altogether, their way of life, their intuitive ways and knowledge of life could offer us many solutions to the modern day problems we all face.

Using Graphic Design to Make Your Website Outstanding

Graphic and web design have so many principles in common that the basics of graphic design can be used for the creation of a successful, highly functional website.

When you are trying to create a website, you can always rely on several little secrets that will attract a large audience and turn it into a loyal group of readers. Graphic design can be utilized to achieve all that.

White Space is Your Friend The usage of white space is one of the most important principles of successful graphic design. The same rule applies to the beautiful appearance of a website.

Rely on several prominent elements and remove all others. Clutter has no place on your pages. You will discover that simplicity may be difficult to achieve but once you get there, you will certainly appreciate the appearance of every page.

Minimalism has always been an important tendency for website development and you should keep it in mind when trying to create a website.

Let the Pictures Speak Design, no matter how great it is, should play a supportive role. The website content is the star of the show. Diverting attention away from it is going to take the focus away from the most important elements on the page.

Choose high quality photographs to illustrate your content. Photos become even more important if you are trying to present products. The elements of graphic design should simply direct the attention of the reader towards the message that you want to deliver.

A Stunning Homepage The first impression is the one that kinds. A mediocre website will have difficulties maintaining the interest of the visitors and keeping them coming back for more. This is why you need a truly stunning homepage.

Put your heart and soul in the development of the homepage. It is the face of your website. Design is often determining for a website's bounce rate - the number of people that leave the site after visiting just one page. Your creative and functional concept should be easy to understand and it should also demonstrate some originality.

The stunning homepage will make it a lot easier for you to create the content and the category pages. They should all follow the same pattern and include the graphical elements that are determining for the appearance of the homepage.

Web design has more in common with graphic design than you have ever believed. Simplicity and originality need to work in harmony. A website needs to be highly functional and user-friendly. Experiment with its appearance but stick to some of the basics. These will give your website the backbone that it should have for consistent success.

Speed Reading Tips - How to Read Faster

Everyone can increase his reading speed, but he has to change his reading habits for doing it. Reading is so natural to most of us that we do not care how we read. Therefore our reading techniques are not optimal. Usually we do not even recognize that we have poor reading habits. If we could improve our reading methods, then we can improve our reading speed. Most of all we have to get rid of bad reading habits:

o Reading words twice. Most people have developed a habit that while reading a text the move backwards with their eyes from time to time and they will re-read some words. It is the biggest obstacle to speed reading. If you can get rid of this habit then some people can even double their reading speed by doing so.

o Sub-vocalization. People are used to say the words out while reading at that slows them down. Our lips are slower than our eyes. If we learn to read only with our eyes then we can start reading much faster.

o Eyes moving from left to right. Everyone is taught to read that way at school. If we read text in this manner then we usually grasp only one or two words with our sight. If you want to read faster then you have to learn to grasp more words with your eyes, which allows you to move your eyes more vertically than horizontally. It can be amazing how this makes you a faster reader.

It takes you some time to get rid of these habits. Actually you will need to take a speed reading course in order to develop new reading habits and learn many other ways for improving your reading techniques. You have to do some work, but it will give you a benefit of having faster reading speed for your entire life. Speed reading will become a new habit for you.

A Beautiful Mind Movie Review - Starring Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connely

"A Beautiful Mind" is a wonderful film based on the life of the Nobel Prize winning mathematician and economist John Nash and his lifelong struggle with schizophrenia. The acting of Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connely are both superb, as is the story, which I find quite moving.

The movie begins at Princeton University, where Nash (Crowe) is attending graduate school in math. He is brilliant but socially awkward. He becomes best friends with his roommate Charles, a literature student.

After college, Nash accepts a position at MIT, along with his friends Sol and Bender. Shortly thereafter he meets Alicia (Connely), with whom he falls in love and eventually marries. Nash runs into his former roommate Charles, who introduces him to his young niece Marcee. Nash also meets a Department of Defense agent, William Parcher. Nash is invited to the pentagon to crack a secret encryption of an enemy communication, which he does in his head. Parcher also asks Nash to look for secret codes in newspapers and magazines. Nash begins behaving erratically.

Sol starts watching Nash and eventually gets him sedated and sent to a psychiatric facility, where it is discovered that he's been suffering from hallucinations and schizophrenia. Eventually he's released from the hospital with the provision that he take antipsychotic medication. Unfortunately the medication has some bad side effects, including impotence, so he secretly stops taking it, whence his hallucinations return.

Eventually Nash is able to keep his illness under control when he realizes that Marcee has not aged since he met her several years ago. He then realizes that Charles, Marcee, and Parcher are products of his imagination. Over the next several years, he slowly recuperates. Eventually he receives the Nobel Prize in Economics as an old man.

Applying for a Loan

In making loan requests, entrepreneurs tend to be confident that they will meet or exceed what they consider conservative financial projections. They then have trouble understanding when they receive a less than enthusiastic response. To complete the picture, however, we need to look at the process from the banker's perspective.

"What bankers view as a good loan application is at times different from what applicants think," says Ray Fincken, vice president of HSBC Bank USA in New York. "Applicants know the bank needs information about their company to process the loan. So in the first interview they often describe all the good things happening within their company -- focusing mainly on marketing and sales.

"However, bankers are usually more interested in assessing risk and consequently learning that the company has a good core foundation. Does the company have experienced management? Do these managers have various talents and experiences to guide the company through good times and bad?"

Given confidence in the management team, the bank must look at the elements of the business plan from a more objective standpoint than the entrepreneur ever can. The critical consideration is whether the company's major products or services provide sufficient profitability and cash flow to meet all its financial obligations, particularly payments to service the debt under consideration.

If the company is a startup, the best indicators are often the norms for the business in which the company will be competing. Are projected margins and ratios in line with others in their industry? The bank will also look at credit reports and tax returns on the key individuals involved in the startup.

If the company has some financial and credit history, the bank will check corporate tax returns and financial statements, individual financial statements, liens, litigation, agency reports such as Dun and Bradstreet, etc. To ensure finances are in order, Ray recommends receiving your personal and business credit reports prior to seeking a loan to make sure the information is correct before going through this process. Misinformation or old loans and liens may erroneously still be on the report. Taking care of these errors prior to applying for a loan can streamline the process.

Fincken says: "We look for consistent, sound cash flow from operations and good, quality assets. We look at these because they are the primary sources of repayment. We then analyze this information and compare it to other similar businesses as a guide."

Once the records are in order, the next step is the bank's formal application process. "Planning ahead will help you increase your chances of receiving a loan as well as streamline the loan timeline," Fincken advises. "Put together a business plan and description of why you need financing; include three years of financial statements or projections."

Expect to be asked, and prepare your answers to the following questions:

o How much money is needed?

o What is the purpose of the loan?

o How long do you anticipate using the money?

o How will the company be able to pay back the loan?

o How will the bank get paid if something goes wrong?

Here is a list of the most common reasons for loan denials:

o The company is deemed unable to repay the loan

o There is inadequate financial information

o The financial statements are unprofessionally prepared

o There are perceived critical weaknesses in management

o Applicants fail to demonstrate their ability to implement sound accounting and management information systems.

You would certainly be reluctant to extend credit to a prospective customer where you had significant doubt of their ability to pay. Remember that the bank's business is to lend money, and that they must apply the same discretion to your request.

Building a Wrestling Ring

Wresting is a very exciting and popular sport that can be enjoyed even in the backyard if a proper ring is available. Building a wrestling ring is really not a very difficult work. If necessary materials and tools are present, then the task can be completed just within a matter of few hours. Following is a step by step guideline for building an excellent wrestling ring.

First, a suitable location has to be selected for the ring. Then, all the grass, dirt, weeds, sharp objects and unnecessary objects have to be removed. The area should be properly leveled. The next thing is to take the measurements of the dimensions of the cleared area. Simply, the size of the eventual ring has to be measured, the size depends on the available amount of space.

Thick foam of 2 inches is to be taken and cut according to the dimensions of the ring. If it is not available then two or more thinner sheets can be stuck together. The thickness should not be less than 2 inches at any cost.

After that, the foam has to be covered from all sides with waterproof material. There should be no gaps in the edges of the covering otherwise the rain water can penetrate inside and damage the foam. If it is possible, sewing machine can be used for sealing the edges.

Now, a piece of plywood has to be taken and has to be cut it in such a manner that it is equal to the foam in dimensions. The plywood has to be laid on the cleared ground, it will form the base of the ring. Now, the foam has to be placed over the plywood and the two can be pasted together.

The four corners of the plywood have to be marked on the ground. A hole that is at least 1 foot deep has to be dug in each marked region. The corner post has to be placed in each hole. Some cement has to be poured in the hole and the remaining space can be filled up with dirt. The posts should be given at least 24 to 48 hours for allowing the cement to dry.

Each post has to be covered with foam. It can be either glue or elastic bands. After this, a hook has to be placed on the outer corner of the post. The height of the hook has to be measured to ensure that the height of the other hooks on the remaining three posts is also same.

The ropes forming the outer boundary of the ring have to be attached to these hooks. The number of hooks on the posts depends on the number of ropes. There are usually 3 to 5 ropes attached. When the ropes have been tied, the wresting ring is now ready to use.
